Balmain Sinfonia is a Sydney-based symphony orchestra. Our aim is to bring high quality orchestral music to the community at very affordable prices. Many gifted players, amateurs and professionals, give freely of their time to achieve this aim.
The orchestra generally plays music from the mainstream repertoire. However, we’re also known to throw in a few surprises to keep things lively and interesting!
The orchestra underwent some changes at the end of 2019. Our esteemed conductor of the previous 28 years, Gary Stavrou retired and has taken up the position of the orchestra’s patron.
A group of keen players has formed an association and are now managing the administration of the orchestra. Most of the players have stayed the same and we have welcomed some new players to the group.
We have welcomed a new Conductor and Musical Director to the orchestra – Monica Buckland She arrived in Australia in 2020 after forging a distinguished career as a conductor in Switzerland, Germany and the UK.
We continue to rehearse in Balmain and we will continue to perform high quality concerts and charge extremely reasonable ticket prices! We really hope that our dedicated audience will continue to follow us!
The Balmain Sinfonia have decided to forge ahead with a program of 5 concerts over 2022. Our first will be ‘Elgar, Mozart, Brahms’ on Saturday 19 March 2022. See the ‘concerts’ section for more details.
The Balmain is often looking for talented musicians to join us. At the moment, we are especially interested to hear from string players. If you have orchestral experience and can play at at least at a Grade 7 level, then get in touch with us at email@example.com. We are a friendly and enthusiastic group who rehearse on Sunday evenings in Balmain.
